This is my third setting of this magical poem. The first attempt (never yet performed, and possibly lost) was a Brittenish (in fact quite kittenish) affair for Peter-Pears-like tenor, four wind instruments & piano, written in 1966 when I was at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The second setting is my op. 60, and was written in Ghana in 1993; see the Mixed Ensemble category of this work-list for details. This third version, for boys' or women's voices and piano, was first performed on May 27th 2004 by the Quiristers of Winchester College, conducted by Christopher Tolley. The pianist was Robert Bottone.
