programme note

Squeezy lasts about eleven minutes, and its form corresponds roughly with the old quick-slow-quick layout of the traditional sonata. The first movement is in truncated sonata form, the second is a simple arioso, and the third is a miniature rondo.  It was written between February and April 1994 in response to a commission from the Royal Overseas League, London. Unfortunately, its performance history has been jinxed by a series of disasters . . .

The young Scottish accordionist for whom I wrote Squeezy had a physical and mental breakdown, and his 1994 recital was cancelled at the last moment. The Curse of Squeezy had struck - not for the last time. Eight years later, Squeezy was programmed in the 2002 Park Lane Group Young Artists Series at London's Purcell Room. Two days before the performance, the Chinese accordionist booked to play it was summarily recalled to The People's Republic. The Curse had struck again. Seven years later, the premiere was scheduled for January 9th 2009, when the brilliant young Polish accordionist Rafal Luc was due to play it in the Park Lane Group's Young Artists Series. He came onstage and played the first two movements with great brilliance and intelligence; then The Curse struck yet again. A key on his instrument jammed, and he had no alternative but stop and leave the platform. The curse of Squeezy had struck thrice.

So Squeezy still awaits its first complete performance; and The Curse of Squeezy apparently remains in force. Who will break it and win the throne of the Kingdom of Accordia and/or the hand of the beautiful Princess Fruity? Will it be a handsome Prince? Or a fair Damsel? Or one who is neither He nor She, but They? The world holds its breath . . .
