programme note

These seven pieces, originally for viola and piano, were written in 2006. The version for cello and piano was made at the same time. Although mainly intended as teaching pieces, they are sufficiently contrasted (and short) to be played in the context of a recital, whether complete or individually - for example, as encore pieces.

  1. the ingenious Spider (Tegenaria domestica) who decorates our houses and eats her husband
  2. the elegant Snail (Helix aspersa) which surprises us with its quickness
  3. the obliging Worm (Lumbricus terrestris) which improves our gardens and recycles us after we die
  4. the workaholic Ant (Formica rufa) who reminds us that we are only human
  5. the mysterious Woodlouse (Oniscus asellus) who works tirelessly under cover, doing something or other
  6. the savage Centipede (Cryptops hortensis) who slightly gives us the willies
  7. the insatiable Caterpillar (Sphinx ligustri) who enjoys our gardens very munch
