Commissioned by Bristol Cathedral in 1987, this setting was found to be too difficult for the choir – and they did not like it. To make up for this, I immediately wrote a second setting for them. See Veni creator II. Although Veni creator I is slightly miscast as an anthem, it has since been performed as a concert piece by other choirs, including the BBC Singers.
