Commissioned and first performed by the 2-piano team of Richard Rodney Bennett and the late Susan Bradshaw. The structural idea is an emotional Marxist dialectic: a couple who love each other get at cross-purposes, which build to a massive row – out of which comes sympathy, followed by passionate rumpy-pumpy. Kindly described by one critic as “a fearful hammering”. Howard and Hilary Shelley also played it.
